What happens when the sheet opens

A spreadsheet is not one page, and that is what makes previewing one awkward. A workbook can hold twenty sheets, a frozen header row, and columns sized so a long product name actually fits. Opening it here draws all of that, so what you read is the layout somebody built rather than a dump of cell values.

The formats differ more than the shared icon suggests. XLSX has been the Excel default since 2007; XLS is the older binary one that accounting and payroll systems still export. XLSB is the binary workbook people switch to when a file grows slow to open. ODS comes out of LibreOffice Calc. XLTX and XLTM are templates, and XLSM is macro-enabled — the macros are never run here, the sheet is only drawn.

Twenty megabytes is the ceiling for one upload. A workbook over it is usually carrying embedded images or a decade of history in a hidden sheet, and saving a copy without the old years is normally enough to get it through. A CSV that Notepad chokes on opens here as a table with real columns. Whatever you do upload is removed once you have finished reading it.

Spreadsheets are one category out of seventeen on this site: 70+ extensions in all, including Word, PDF, CAD drawings, Outlook mail and Photoshop files. A folder of mixed attachments does not need five separate tools.

Charts come with it

A chart embedded in the sheet is drawn where it sits, not left as an empty box.

The numbers, readable

Formula cells show the figure they resolved to, so you can quote it without Excel.

Eight spreadsheet formats

XLS, XLSX, CSV, ODS, XLSM, XLSB, XLTX and XLTM, up to 20 MB each.

Deleted after viewing

These files hold payroll and pricing. Yours is removed once you have read it.

Someone sends you a workbook and the machine you are on has no Excel on it. Drop the file here and the sheet opens in a browser tab: XLS and XLSX, CSV, ODS from LibreOffice Calc, the macro-enabled XLSM, the binary XLSB, and the XLTX and XLTM templates. Twenty megabytes per file.

Reading is the whole job. The sheet is rendered rather than parsed into a plain grid, so column widths, merged cells, currency and date formats and any embedded charts come through, and formula cells show the figure they worked out to instead of the formula text. If the workbook is protected, there is a password field under the upload box.

Your file is deleted once you have viewed it, which matters more with a spreadsheet than with most documents: payroll, pricing and client lists live in these files. And when what you need is this rendering inside software you are building rather than in a browser tab, the same engine is licensed as an SDK covering 75 extensions across 18 families.

When you do not have Excel to hand

A workbook in your inbox

The attachment arrived on a phone, or on a laptop with no Office licence. Open it in the tab you already have.

A CSV too big for Notepad

An export opens as a table with columns and headers instead of a wall of commas.

An XLS from an old system

Files from software that never moved past Excel 2003 still open, and so do the XLSB workbooks people save when a file gets slow.

Is it safe to view my Excel document online?

The upload travels over HTTPS, and your Excel file is reachable only through a random identifier your browser holds and nothing links to. It is deleted once you have viewed it, which is the part that matters most.

Does Doconut store uploaded Excel files?

It's important to note that we do not store uploaded Excel files after processing. It gets deleted as soon as it is viewed. You are requested to avoid uploading invalid format, corrupt or infected documents here.

Are there any limits to using Doconut.app to view Excel files?

One Excel file at a time, up to 20MB. That ceiling is set per format, so another viewer here may take more or less than this page does.

Put this viewer inside your own application

The engine rendering your file here is licensed as a .NET SDK: 75 extensions across 18 families, running on your own servers, so the documents never leave them.
