Open an RTF file online, free
Upload a Rich Text Format file and read it in the browser, with the headings, tables, colors and images where the writer put them.
Drop the file
From your computer or your phone
We render it
On our server, so nothing installs on yours
You read it
And your copy is deleted when you close it
Read an RTF without Word or WordPad
You should not need a word processor license to read a document somebody sent you. This page runs in the browser, so an RTF opens the same way on a phone, a Chromebook, or a work laptop where you cannot install anything.
It also covers a gap Windows left. WordPad, the app that used to open these files on a double-click, was removed from Windows in 2024. On a machine without Word, an RTF now tends to land in Notepad, which shows the markup rather than the document.
Two things about the format trip people up. Images live inside an RTF instead of being linked, so a file with a few screenshots grows quickly and can be turned away at 15 MB. And fonts are named but never embedded, so a font you do not have is swapped for the nearest one, and the line breaks can fall differently than they did in Word.
Formatting preserved
Headings, colors, tables and the images stored inside the file all render.
Zoom and page controls
Move through the document page by page and magnify anything too small to read.
Find a word
An RTF is text underneath, so every word in the document can be searched.
Print what you see
Send the rendered document to a printer with its layout intact.
Your file is deleted
The RTF you upload is deleted after you have viewed it. We keep no copy, so there is nothing to come back and remove later.
An RTF keeps its formatting as text. The fonts, the tables and the images are written into the file alongside the words as codes, which is why opening one in a plain text editor shows you the codes and not the document. Upload it here and you get the document.
Nothing to install and no word processor involved. Choose a file, wait for the first page to render, then zoom, search for a word, or print what you see.
Rich Text Format is Microsoft's exchange format for formatted text: published in 1987, last revised in 2008, and unchanged since. That is why a file written in it twenty years ago still opens correctly, and why an RTF carries no macros — the format has nowhere to put them.
The format this page opens
Rich Text Format only, so nothing is converted on the way in — what renders is the file you uploaded.
RTF, Microsoft's Rich Text Format
A formatted-text format that stores everything it needs — fonts, tables, colors, images — as text inside a single file, which is what lets one document open on Windows, macOS and Linux.

Is it safe to view my RTF document online?
The upload travels over HTTPS, and your RTF file is reachable only through a random identifier your browser holds and nothing links to. It is deleted once you have viewed it, which is the part that matters most.
Does Doconut store uploaded RTF files?
It's important to note that we do not store uploaded RTF files after processing. It gets deleted as soon as it is viewed. You are requested to avoid uploading invalid format, corrupt or infected documents here.
Are there any limits to using Doconut.app to view RTF files?
One RTF file at a time, up to 15MB. That ceiling is set per format, so another viewer here may take more or less than this page does.
