Open a Word document online, free
You have a DOCX and no copy of Word. Upload it here and it opens in the browser — DOC, DOCX, ODT, RTF, DOCM, DOT, DOTX, DOTM and OTT, up to 15 MB.
Drop the file
From your computer or your phone
We render it
On our server, so nothing installs on yours
You read it
And your copy is deleted when you close it
What happens when you upload a Word file
Upload a DOC or DOCX and the document renders in the browser, with no Office licence and no plugin involved.
Nine extensions go through the same renderer: DOC, DOCX, DOCM, DOT, DOTX, DOTM, ODT, OTT and RTF, at up to 15 MB each.
Once the first page is drawn you can move through the document, zoom, search its text and print it with the page breaks the author set.
Word is one of 70+ formats this site opens the same way — PSD without Photoshop, DWG without AutoCAD, MSG without Outlook.
Renders on upload
Pages are drawn server-side, so an old laptop opens a 15 MB report as quickly as a new one.
Opens on any machine
A borrowed computer or a phone shows the same document, because the rendering does not happen on your device.
Find text
Search the words in the document itself, not a picture of them.
Print with the document's own margins, fonts and page breaks rather than a reflowed copy.
Deleted after viewing
Your upload is removed from the server when you are done, which matters more with a contract than with a photo.
A DOCX is a ZIP archive full of XML, and a DOC written in 1997 is a different binary layout altogether. Neither one tells a browser how to draw a page, which is why opening a Word file on a machine without Office gets you a download prompt or a screen of markup. Upload it here and the pages are rendered on our servers, then sent back as something your browser already knows how to display.
Nine extensions take the same route: DOC, DOCX and the macro-enabled DOCM, the templates DOT, DOTX, DOTM and OTT, plus ODT from LibreOffice and RTF. Templates and macro-enabled files are read, never run — the viewer draws what the document says and ignores what its macros ask for. The ceiling is 15 MB per file, and a long report usually reaches it through embedded images rather than through its text.
Your document is deleted after viewing. There is no account to create and no copy kept. While it is open you can move between pages, zoom, search the text and print with the original layout. If the file that stopped you is a spreadsheet or a slide deck, the Excel and PowerPoint viewers work the same way; if you need this rendering inside your own application instead of a browser tab, that is what the SDK is for.
Which Word files open here
All nine extensions, including the template and macro-enabled variants Word writes: DOT, DOTX, DOTM, DOCM and OTT.
The binary format Word used until 2003, and still what most old archives contain.
Word's format since 2007: a ZIP archive of XML parts, which is why a text editor shows nothing useful.
OpenDocument Text, written by LibreOffice, OpenOffice and Google Docs exports.
Rich Text Format, where the formatting is stored as plain text — which is why an RTF often survives a transfer that breaks a DOC.

Is it safe to view my Word document online?
The upload travels over HTTPS, and your Word file is reachable only through a random identifier your browser holds and nothing links to. It is deleted once you have viewed it, which is the part that matters most.
Does Doconut store uploaded Word files?
It's important to note that we do not store uploaded Word files after processing. It gets deleted as soon as it is viewed. You are requested to avoid uploading invalid format, corrupt or infected documents here.
Are there any limits to using Doconut.app to view Word files?
One Word file at a time, up to 15MB. That ceiling is set per format, so another viewer here may take more or less than this page does.
WANT THIS RENDERING IN YOUR OWN APP?
The engine that just opened your file ships as an SDK: 75 extensions across 18 families, running on your servers instead of ours.
